Artwork by Patrick Dougherty is truly remarkable. I love to see the environmental artist getting more and more attention by the public. Artists who can produce sensational bodies of work using naturally occurring materials are my favorite ones.
Patrick uses the tree saplings as a sculptural material. Starting with single trees, his work soon evolved to a monumental scale and over the past 30 years, Dougherty has produced more than 250 giant scale artworks. His sculpture has been seen worldwide—from Scotland to Japan to Brussels, and all over the United States.
In 1982 his first work, Maple Body Wrap, was included in the North Carolina Biennial Artists’ Exhibition, sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of Art.
There is a beautiful book about Patrick and his work published in 2009 with over 200 pages of wonderful photos. You can explore his webpage on stickwork.net
I hope you got inspired so watch out for these amazing organic sculptures out there while you travel. I was lucky to see some horses done this way on the way to county Mayo. I am not sure if they were done by Patrick himself because they were small but still, it was an interesting experience to see something like this near freeway in Ireland.
Enjoy today’s post.
